Over the past few weeks, volunteers have been working to collect donations to be sent to Ukraine at Bishop’s University. On Friday, about fifteen of them gathered to arrange dozens of boxes of merchandise donations.

The bishop’s University chaplain and co-organizer of the event, Jesse Diamond, explained that this initiative was born out of a call for help from members of the Sherbrooke Ukrainian community.

They provided a list of materials needed abroad, which are difficult for humanitarian organizations to obtain. We got medical equipment, camping equipment, some baby supplies and basic food*he says.

The outpouring of generosity from the university community has been snowballed. It started on campus with faculty and staff. Students then made donations, and over the past two weeks, the trip has spread to Sherbrooke, North Hatley and surrounding communities*underlined the chaplain.

Ukrainian Anna Izmaylova works at Bishop’s University and is one of the co-organizers of the collection. One who has lived in Sherbrooke since 2011 said he was particularly touched by the project.

This is incredible. I discovered that in our house, at our Bishop’s University, many students were of Ukrainian origin, which I did not know. I discovered a small Ukrainian community with us. […] Each of us came from different parts of Ukraine. The reason for the meeting was not good, but I was glad to meet and get to know a few people herehe exclaimed.

The goods will be shipped to a Ukrainian church in Montreal on Saturday morning. Emergency medical equipment will be brought to Ukraine by plane, and other equipment will be sent by boat.
