This Monday a suicide attack was launched against a mosque at least 27 deadincluding several policemen, and 140 injured in the city of Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, an event that led the authorities to declare a “state of war” against terrorism.
“The death toll has risen to 27, and there are more than 140 injured,” city police officer Muhammad Ijaz Khan told media at the entrance to the attacked mosque.
The attacker blew himself up while about 200 worshipers were praying inside or head to the mosque to pray. The police compound is in a high-security area of the city, as are several government buildings, and it was unclear how the attacker managed to get so far into the compound.
The explosion caused the roof of the building to collapse, which hurt many peoplesaid Zafar Khan, a local police officer.
One survivor, police officer Meena Gul, 38, said she was inside the mosque when the bomb went off and didn’t know how he escaped unharmed. After the detonation she heard screams and crying, she said.
Rescuers were trying to clear the rubble and reach people who were still trapped, according to police. Many of the injured were in critical condition in a nearby hospital and it was feared the death toll would rise.
