People who are going to process some kind of residence permit in the United States should take into account the news about rate changes.
According to information from the El Nuevo Herald website, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) would make the new costs effective starting in March.
This increase would be the first since December 23, 2016. Since that date, in 2019, during the presidency of Donald Trump, there has been a proposal for a subsequent increase. This was blocked in October 2020 by a court shortly before it went into effect.
The memo explains that upon publication of the regulatory notice in the Federal Register, a 60-day period opens for public comment. Based on responses to those comments, The increases will be established starting from 6 March.
The objective of the increase, as explained in the note of El Nuevo Herald, would be to increase the workforce of migrant personnel and the salaries of employees.
“The expected revenues from the proposed rule would allow USCIS to increase the number of judges processing applications, implement technology improvements, and increase the support provided to individuals seeking information and assistance”, according to the official statement.
New immigration taxes
The same note indicates that the fee increases for conducting the procedures would range from US$25 to US$900.
One of the proposals is that these new prices incorporate the costs of biometric services, which today have a separate fee.
Estimates indicate that the naturalization process, through the N-400 form, could increase from $640 to $760. This $35 increase would incorporate biometric costs into the separate fee. This would simplify the submission process.
The current naturalization fee is a total of $725, including biometrics.
For the work permit process, for which Form I-765 is required, the increase would be US$240. That would go from US$410 to US$650.
Also Lower fees may be implemented for some forms filed online.
