Save the Children, an international children’s rights NGO, will provide humanitarian assistance with a goal of 2 million dollars (approximately 2.5 billion won in Korean currency) to recover from earthquake damage in Turkey and Syria.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria around 4 a.m. on Monday the 6th (local time). Then, at around 1:30 p.m., a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in the Elbistan region of the Karamanras province of Turkey.

The earthquake has now killed more than 4,000 people and injured tens of thousands, many of them children. Rescuers are now rescuing people trapped under the rubble of thousands of collapsed buildings, and the number of casualties is rising rapidly.

The Turkiye Disaster Response Agency said the earthquake destroyed more than 2,800 buildings in Turkiye, including hospitals, schools and government buildings. Sasha Ekanayake, Director of Save the Children Turkiye, said, “Since the earthquake, thousands of victims have been living in sub-zero weather with blizzards and blizzards. The international community must act now to help thousands of victims.” said.

Northwestern Syria also suffered heavy losses. Syria is already suffering from 12 years of conflict, economic collapse and widespread hunger. “Families are already struggling to make it through this winter in Syria, where the economy has collapsed after 12 years of conflict,” said Oke Bauman, head of media for Syria at Save the Children. We are in a situation where we do not even know if we will be able to sleep in a warm place.”

Save the Children confirmed the safety of local employees and declared ‘CAT2’, the second highest category among disaster response steps. In close cooperation with the Turkish government and key stakeholders, an emergency relief response team was dispatched to the site to support the national emergency response, and plans to provide cold-weather items, including blankets and winter clothing, and emergency kits to affected communities.

Save the Children is conducting emergency relief fundraising for children and families affected by the Turkiye earthquake. You can participate through the Save the Children website, Naver Happy Bean donation box, or Hana Bank account 379-910018-04804 (account owner: Save the Children Korea).
