In 2017, 16 rescue dogs, which played a big role in the Mexico earthquake and gave hope to the people, were dispatched to help the victims of the Turkiye (Turkey) and Syrian earthquakes.
According to the British BBC and the American CNN on the 7th (local time), Mexico sent 16 search and rescue dogs to Turkey this morning to rescue victims of the strong earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrado shared photos and news of the 16 search and rescue dog teams on social media. Search and rescue dogs in Mexico are the protagonists who played an active role in the two major earthquakes that hit central Mexico in 2017.
Rescue dogs search through rubble that is difficult for people to enter and find a living person or dead body. It helps in search with a sense of smell that is dozens of times higher than that of humans.
At the time, Frida, a yellow Labrador retriever belonging to the Mexican Marine Corps, gained international fame for saving dozens of lives while walking around the scene wearing thick goggles and boots. A statue was later erected in front of the Naval Statue in Mexico City to commemorate Frida’s achievements, when she died in 2022.
In this search support, ‘Echo’, a Belgian malinoe, and ‘Julie’, a black Labrador retriever, who are colleagues of ‘Frida’, will be together. Soon, a team of search and rescue dogs from Mexico will land at Adana Airport in southern Turkey, near the epicenter of the quake, to help the scene.
Meanwhile, Mexico isn’t the only country that has deployed rescue dogs to help with the rescue effort. Elite search and rescue dogs are dispatched in many countries, including Croatia, Germany, Greece, the United Kingdom and the United States.
