Amidst the loss of life and property due to a series of strong earthquakes in Turkey, a Turkician reported the damage in Korean and requested assistance. He appealed for support from Koreans, citing prices in Korea and Turkey.
Celine Gunner, a digital producer at a broadcasting station in Istanbul, the capital of Turkey, tweeted on the 7th, “Everyone, this is an emergency. “Turkeye needs international help,” she said. “Thousands of people are left on the streets in Turkey as houses have collapsed.”
Mr. Güner went on to say, “Financial support is needed to meet basic needs such as sleeping bags, blankets, baby food, and food support,” adding the addresses of official organizations in Turkey that are receiving donations to help earthquake victims.
Currently, there are three public institutions in Turkey that are receiving donations: the Disaster Management Agency (AFAD), the Non-Profit Organization for Disaster Search and Relief (AKUT), and the Anatolian People’s Peace Foundation (AHBAP), a relief organization.
Mr. Güner said, “The difference between the value of the currency between Korea and Turkey is huge, so you can buy 5 blankets for the price of 3 cups of coffee.”
Accordingly, Korean netizens are showing a movement to participate by verifying the donation details. A Korean netizen encouraged donations by explaining in detail how to donate.
In response, Kuner said, “I am in tears because so many people are so considerate that I can’t even imagine. I found out why I like Korea again,” he said. “My writing reached more people than I could have imagined, and many people participated.” He added, “I will not forget the help of my brother’s country.”
Since 2018, Guner has been posting articles in Korean on Twitter and communicating with Korean netizens. He is currently announcing the earthquake damage situation in Turkey in Korean and appealing for support from each country.
At around 10:17 am on the 6th (Korean time), a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred 37 km west-northwest of Turkiye Gaziantep. When the earthquake struck, buildings collapsed, causing massive loss of life and property. At around 7:24 pm on the same day, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred again 108 km north of Gaziantep, causing secondary damage.
Currently, at least 7,800 people are reported to have died in Turkey and neighboring Syria due to the strong earthquake, and 5,894 people are known to have lost their lives in Turkey alone. The World Health Organization (WHO) said more casualties are expected in the future as the aftershocks continued, and rescue operations were hampered by bad weather and lack of equipment.
