The Republic of Korea Overseas Emergency Relief Team (KDRT), dispatched to respond to damage from the earthquake in Turkey, rescued one survivor there.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 9th that “our emergency relief team started relief activities in Hatay Antakya High School and other places and rescued one survivor.” The survivor is a man in his mid-70s, conscious and has been confirmed to have no major health problems.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that four additional deaths were confirmed at the place where the survivor was rescued.
The death toll reported in both countries exceeded 15,000 on the third day of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria. According to AFP, the death toll from the earthquake is 12,391 in Turkey and 2,992 in Syria, bringing the total to 15,383.
The South Korean government dispatched a total of 118 KDRT members the previous morning at the request of Turkiye.
KDRT was established in 2007 in accordance with the ‘Overseas Emergency Relief Act’ (Overseas Emergency Relief Act). In the event of a large-scale overseas disaster, KDRT conducts support activities such as disaster relief after deliberation by the public-private joint Overseas Emergency Relief Council.
The dispatched relief force this time consisted of 118 people, including 1 person from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 6 people from KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency), 62 people from the National Fire Service, including 119 rescuers, and 49 people from the Ministry of National Defense, mainly from the Army Special Warfare Command. It is more than the size of 60 to 80 people.
KDRT selected Antakya, Hatay Province, Turkey as the rescue operation area and set up a base camp at Selim Anadolu High School. From 5:00 am local time on the 8th, search and rescue activities are being conducted at Antakya High School and other areas.
