A newborn baby found with an umbilical cord connected to a mother who died in the rubble of a building hit by a strong earthquake in Syria has been safely rescued. Since then, inquiries about adopting this baby are pouring in from all over the world.
According to the BBC on the 9th (local time), the baby is now called ‘Aya’. ‘Aya’ means miracle in Arabic.
Aya was rescued from the collapse of a 5-story apartment building in Jindires, northern Syria, where a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck on the 6th. Found 10 hours after the earthquake, Aya was crying with the umbilical cord still intact. Syrian medical authorities believe that Aya was out of the world three hours before being rescued.
Aya, who was in poor condition at the time of the rescue, was taken to the hospital and quickly recovered. “When I arrived (at the hospital), I was in very bad shape,” said Dr. Hani Marouf. His body temperature was low and his breathing was weak,” he said. So far, her arm and leg movements are normal.”
Aya miraculously survived, but her mother, father and four siblings all died.
As the news of Aya spread through social media, thousands of people inquired about adoption. A Kuwaiti TV anchor also said, “I am ready to take care of this child and adopt it. If possible through legal process, she would like to do that,” he revealed.
Khalida Atia, the hospital administrator, also received dozens of calls asking for adoption. However, she is not considering adoption for the time being.
He emphasized, “No one can adopt Aya now,” and “I will take care of Aya like my own family until her distant relatives arrive.” She is also breastfeeding Aya by his wife, who is now raising their 4-month-old baby.
