Search and rescue activities by the Korea Emergency Relief Team (KDRT) are continuing for the second day in the area affected by the earthquake in Turkiye.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 10th, KDRT started search and rescue activities in the earthquake-stricken area of Antakya, Hatay Province, southeast of Turkey at 5:00 am the previous day (11:00 local time, Korean time), and by 12:00 noon the same day, a 2-year-old girl was found. A total of 5 survivors were rescued, ranging from a man in his 70s.
On this day, at the request of the Turkiye Disaster Authority, KDRT is conducting an intensive search for suspected survivors, about 1.6 km away from the campsite of Selim Anadolu High School in Antakya, from 7:35 a.m. (1:35 p.m. Korean time). .
A total of 39 KDRT members, including firefighters and military personnel, and two teams consisting of military dogs were put into the search that day. However, as of 9:00 a.m. (3:00 p.m. Korean time), “no additional survivors have been rescued,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Hundreds of aftershocks followed the 7.8 earthquake on the 6th in the southeastern region of Turkiye, which shares the border with Syria. As a result, the number of deaths reported so far in both Turkey and Syria has exceeded 20,000.
At the request of the Turkiye side, the Korean government dispatched a total of 118 KDRT to the site on the 8th. These KDRTs will first carry out relief activities such as search and rescue in Turkey until the 17th.
In the midst of this, Foreign Minister Jin Park inspected the damage and rescue situation of the earthquake in Turkey with executives this morning, and Vice Minister Lee Do-hoon also held a meeting of the emergency relief headquarters’ countermeasures group to discuss future countermeasures.
The government plans to consider sending additional KDRTs in a shift format depending on the local situation in Turkey.
