In general terms, pets cannot be left alone and unattended more than three consecutive days. The term is reduced to 24 hours in the case of dogs.

As reported by 20minutos.es, in the case of shepherd dogs, the 24 hours can be exceeded if they have a tracker to know your location and whether shelter is available for bad weather conditions.

For cats, hamsters or birds, three days is the maximum time to be alone. Failure to comply with this rule may result in a fine up to 10,000 euros.

Additionally, the law will include a list of animals that cannot be considered pets. The list is not closed yet, but it is expected that mice, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, turtles, parakeets, parrots, lovebirds, snakes, spiders, iguanas, chameleons, geckos and birds native to other countries will be excluded.

If someone already has one of these animals at home, they can request an authorization to keep it responsibly until the animal dies.

Also, the new law expressly prohibits the “marketing of dogs, cats and ferrets in pet stores, as well as their display and display to the public for commercial purposes”. Likewise, violent and vexatious practices are prohibited, such as “regularly keeping dogs and cats on terraces, balconies, roofs, closets, basements, courtyards and the like or vehicles”.

In one of the central points, the new rule ensures that it will not be possible “to take animals tied to moving motor vehicles”, or “leave any pet unattended for more than three consecutive days”, a term which is reduced to 24 hours in the case of dogs.

On Sunday, pet store owners protested that they will see forced to close their businesses under the new law because it allows only licensed breeders to sell cats, dogs and ferrets. Thousands of jobs will be lostthey pointed out, and the black market in pets and exotic animals will grow.
