Hyundai Motor Group first entered the US electric vehicle market in 2014 with the Kia Soul EV. In 2017, Hyundai Ioniq EV was released, but annual sales were only around 2,000 units until 2018.

However, with the launch of compact sports utility vehicles (SUVs) such as Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV in 2021, sales in the same year exceeded 10,000 units for the first time after entering the US electric vehicle market.

Last year, Hyundai Ioniq 5 (22,982 units) and Kia EV6 (20,498 units) sold more than 20,000 units each, with annual sales soaring to 58,028 units. As of January this year, 4387 units were sold, mainly for Ioniq 5 (1548 units) and EV6 (1110 units).

When Hyundai Motor Group announced its annual business results in January, it announced its goal of selling 73,000 electric vehicles in the US market this year. Kia has set a target of 58,000 units. The combined target of the two companies is 131,000 units, far more than twice the sales volume of last year.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to achieve this year’s goal by introducing new vehicles such as Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia EV9, and Genesis GV70 electrified models.
