After the blow suffered by the confrontation with the French president Emmanuel Macron, the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, this Monday entered the new troubles due to the very low number of voters in the Italian regional elections and the harsh attack by his ally Silvio Berlusconi against the Ukrainian leader Volodimir Zelenski.

Berlusconi, a close friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin who calls Ukrainian Prime Minister Zelensky “that gentleman,” said: “I would not have sat down and talked to him.” his leaders met with the Ukrainian premier and promised that he would travel to Ukraine to meet him.

Friday the 24th will mark the first anniversary of the war Putin started with his invasion of Ukraine that day. The right-wing government in Italy joined the position of total confrontation against the Russians from 27 European countries.

The singing voice is led by Meloni and her Fratelli d’Italia party, which won the national elections and governed less than three months ago. But the two allies it has, Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s Lega, are led by politicians who supported Putin in the last few years.

Both claim to support the decisions of the European Union, including the shipment of weapons to the Ukrainians. They cannot challenge the United States, the leader of the Western coalition against Putin.

But the majority of Italians are growing in favor of not supporting Ukraine with the supply of weapons to avoid reprisals threatened by the Russians, including atomic bombs.

In this incandescent framework, Berlusconi’s statements after voting in the regional elections have produced a seismic movement in the political framework.

A Ukrainian government spokesman said that “Berlusconi’s senseless accusations against Zelensky are an attempt to kiss Putin’s hands, bloodied up to the elbows. A way to show your loyalty to the Russian dictator. Instead, we appreciate the immediate response from Meloni who reaffirmed her strong support for Ukraine”.

After recovering from the surprise caused by Berlusconi’s assassination attempt, the head of government, ill in bed with a strong flu, mobilized the entire official apparatus to confirm that nothing had changed. It could not be otherwise. The Western US-Europe alliance has no cracks, the Americans would not allow them.

Crisis in the governing coalition

Meloni’s problem is how to overcome the crisis affecting the government alliance, whose second figure is Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Berlusconi’s right-hand man and “in pectore” heir to the former prime minister, who turned 87 .

Tajani totally identifies with the hard line against Putin and his invasion war that half-destroyed Ukraine. He turns a deaf ear to the growling cannon shots that Berlusconi fires from time to time, which this time were more aimed at attacking Meloni than Zelenski.

But Berlusconi will not be able to prevent the head of government from traveling to Ukraine, even if he creates serious problems with the minor allies of the Brothers of Italy.

Victory of the right in the regional elections

Berlusconi’s departure from the scene coincided, and not by chance, with the regional elections which showed how the distance between the electorate and the political structures increases.

In the two most important regions, Lombardy (Milan) and Lazio (Rome), of the 12 million citizens summoned to the polls, only 41.55% voted. This is an impressive popular departure.

In the previous regionals, attendance was 70.63%. He abstention penalty It was also throughout the political arc.

On the second day of voting, this Monday the polls closed at 15:00 (four hours less in Argentina). The exam started immediately.

The two regions are in the hands of centre-right parties and the latest projections confirm the victory of the right-wing government parties.
