Shanghai, China, was found to be the most expensive city to spend on a Valentine’s Day date among major cities in the world.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), an economic analysis agency affiliated with the British current affairs weekly ‘The Economist’, analyzed and announced the top 15 cities with the most expensive Valentine’s Day dates on the 14th (Korean time).
EIU hypothesizes that on Valentine’s Day, a pair of lovers go on a dinner date, have a drink at a posh hotel, have dinner, watch a movie, take a taxi home, and buy a bottle of wine. The estimated cost of spending was based on a survey of 2022 global cost of living data for 172 cities at the end of last year.
As a result, the first place was Shanghai, China, which costs 655 dollars (about 823,000 won). In Shanghai, the cost of dinner alone was found to be over $400.
In second place was New York, USA, with prices in the $600 range, followed by St. Petersburg, Russia, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Manama, Bahrain, Moscow, Russia, Paris, France, and Los Angeles (LA, USA) with prices in the high $500 range. Amman, Jordan, and Tel Aviv, Israel, also cost more than $500.
Washington DC in the US, Beijing in China, Milan in Italy, Doha in Qatar, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) followed suit. .
EIU also separately calculated and ranked the cost of beauty salons, cosmetics, and gym registrations required to prepare for a date. The first place was LA, USA, which cost close to $500, followed by Doha, Qatar, and London, UK, with around $400.
It was followed by Frankfurt in Germany, New York in the US, Zurich in Switzerland, Dalian in China, Hong Kong, Geneva in Switzerland, Baku in Azerbaijan, Seattle in the US, San Francisco in the US, Minneapolis in the US, Kuwait City in the US, and Singapore.
Major cities in Korea, such as Seoul, were not ranked in either of these two surveys.
