Convenience store CU appears to be among the homepages of 12 domestic academic and research institutes attacked by Chinese hacker Xiaoqiying during the Lunar New Year holidays.

According to BGF Retail, the operator of CU, and the industry on the 15th, the current CU homepage is inaccessible.

BGF Retail said on the same day, “We recognized that there was an external hacking attempt on the CU homepage today, and immediately stopped operating the site.”

The attacked CU homepage is a ‘brand information site’. The company said, “This site is operated to introduce brands and guide products/services. Customer information is safely managed through a separate system.”

Xiao Qi-ying posted a total of 5 Internet addresses (URLs) on the Telegram channel at around 10:44 pm on the 14th and announced the hacking fact. In response, KISA notified the five damaged servers of the hacking and is conducting a separate investigation.

Currently, the CU side is in a position that it cannot be certain that ‘Xiao Qi-ying’ is behind this attack. An official from BGF Retail said, “Currently, hacking is suspected.”

An official from KISA said, “It is difficult to reveal which company’s server was damaged, but we have already recognized the attack (hacker) and contacted five places,” and “we are checking the exact hacking route.”

Meanwhile, from the 22nd to the 25th of last month, Xiao Qi-ying made his name known by hacking 12 academic institutions, including the Korean Language Society, the Korean Archaeological Society, and the Korean Parents’ Association, and then conducting a webpage alteration (de-face) attack.

The industry believes that Xiao Qi-ying’s attack methods, including recent additional attacks, are not at a high level. ‘D-Face Hacking’, which they usually use, is evaluated as easy.

An official in the security industry said, “It seems that they launched an attack like this to make themselves known as new hackers.”
