close to completion the first year of war between Ukraine and RussiaUS President Joe Biden visits Kiev this Monday and meets his counterpart Volodimir Zelenski.
During his visit, the US president announced an additional $500 million in aid and announced that he will launch more sanctions against Russia for the invasion this week.
“A year later, Kiev is holding on. And Ukraine resists. Democracy resists,” Biden said, ahead of the first anniversary of the war on Feb. 24.
This meeting comes after Zelensky met with Biden on Dec. 21 during a historic visit to Washington, the Ukrainian president’s first foreign trip since the war began.
Ukrainian media showed pictures of both leaders walking near the Cathedral of San Miguelin central Kiev, during a walk on Monday and heading towards a memorial wall honoring Ukrainian soldiers who fell in the war against Russia.
Biden is visiting Kiev on the anniversary of the climax of the EuroMaidan revolution, a series of anti-government protests between 2013 and 2014 that toppled pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych.
Over a hundred protesters were killed during those protests, many of them in a single day, February 20, 2014, and are known in Ukraine as the Heavenly Hundred.
Biden’s arrival also comes after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba canceled a scheduled visit to Brussels today to meet his European Union (EU) colleagues where new aid to Ukraine will be discussed.
