A former Mexican minister was convicted of drug trafficking in New York: he could receive a life sentence

Genaro Garcia Lunaformer Secretary of Public Security of Mexico between 2006 and 2012, was found guilty of drug trafficking by a court in New York, USA. Now, the former official risks life imprisonment.

This was established by the Federal Court of the Eastern District of New York, through a jury composed of twelve members who held him responsible for five charges unanimously.

García Luna, 54, was found guilty of having participated in the management of a criminal enterprise whose activity continues today; conspiracy to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine; conspiracy to distribute and possess 5 kilograms or more of cocaine with intent to distribute it in the United States and conspiracy to import the same amount or more.

Meanwhile, the fifth offense was for giving perjury to US authorities when applying for citizenship.

The sentence will be known June 27 at 11 a.m., Judge Brian Cogan said.

Who is the former Mexican minister guilty of drug trafficking

Genaro García Luna worked for a decade in the secret services in Mexico. During Vicente Fox’s government (2000-2006) he headed the Federal Investigation Agency (AFI), whose main objective was the fight against organized crime.

Then he held the position of Secretary of Public Security in the administration of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).

Since 2012 he lives in Florida, United States. From there, as the Public Prosecutor’s Office demonstrated during the trial, you travel regularly to Mexico.

The former official was arrested in December 2019 in Dallas (Texas) and remained in custody until the trial began on January 17, when jury selection began.
