Head of the US-based terrorist organization Tondar.
Accused of conspiring and planning various terrorism, including the terrorist attack on a mosque in Iran
German government warns against execution in case of execution
A dual citizen of Iran and Germany has been sentenced to death for conspiring and carrying out terrorism against Iran. The German government has warned that it will take action if the death sentence is carried out.
Mizan News Agency, run by the Iranian judiciary, said on the 21st (local time) that the Islamic Revolutionary Court ordered Jamshid Sharmahd, the head of the terrorist organization Tondar (Persian word for thunder), to be sentenced to the highest level of corruption on the planet. He was sentenced to death for ‘corruption on earth’.
Iranian authorities claim that Sharmahd, a dual national of Iran and Germany and a permanent resident of the United States, led the California-based terrorist organization Tondar and plotted and carried out various terror attacks in Iran. Tondar, also known as ‘The Kingdom Assembly of Iran’, is an organization that seeks to rebuild the dynasty before the Islamic Revolution.
The Iranian government believes that Tondar conspired to carry out a terrorist attack on major facilities in Iran with the help of the United States and Israel, and that Sharmahd was instigated in 2008 at the Seyed al-Shohada Mosque in Shiraz, central Iran, in which 14 people were killed. In addition, Tondar is also accused of plotting 27 bombings over the past several years, targeting Shiraz’s Sivand Dam, Tehran’s Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum and Tehran’s book fair.
Iran’s judiciary said Sharmahd’s trial had been held seven times since last year in the presence of a lawyer.
Sharmahd moved to the United States in 2003 and was arrested by Iranian authorities after making radio broadcasts criticizing the Iranian regime. In an August 2020 statement, Iranian intelligence authorities did not disclose the specifics of the process, only stating that they had arrested him in a “complex operation.”
The German government strongly objected. German Foreign Minister Anna Lena Baerbock said in a statement that “the death sentence against Sharmahd is absolutely unacceptable” and warned that “clear countermeasures will be implemented if an execution is carried out against him.”
