This time the dogs prevented the wolf from getting away, but they can’t always do it. The area where the events took place has witnessed several attacks on livestock in recent months.

Fernández, for example, comes from losing three sheep in another wild attack. Among the main concerns of farmers is help for wolf injuries, which does not include veterinary costs if the defense dog is injured.

A recurring problem

Since wolves have long been a threat to livestock in the area, Some communities have increased compensation for the damage they cause.

This is the case with Cantabrianwhich increased compensation for wildlife damage to primary sector production, thus including the loss of mastiffs from wolf attacks.

In this way, 300 euros will be paid for mastiffs with zootechnical action up to 12 months and 400 in the case of adults, in addition to compensation for veterinary expenses and medicines for injured animals.

On the other hand, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia believes that cataloging the wolf as a protected species can be a “obvious problem“for extensive livestock, since in 2022 there were 38 wolf attacks in the Basque Country, where 54 animals died.

Faced with this problem, the regional government has approved a decree on preventive measures against wildlife, such as the acquisition of portable fences, electric shepherds, livestock geolocation devices and mastiff dogs.
