It is known as the largest prison in Latin America and can accommodate up to 40,000 people at a time. It is surrounded by concrete walls that are over 11 meters high, and has electric fences, 19 watchtowers, and full-body and parcel scanners installed. About 850 military and police personnel are in charge of security, including guard dogs.

“It is a monument of justice for 120,000 people who have lost loved ones,” Minister of Justice and Public Safety Gustavo Villatoro said.

The Buquele government has been carrying out an operation to eradicate gangs since declaring a ‘war on crime’ in March last year. The government is determined to punish the 64,000 gang members arrested during the administration. There were also controversies about human rights violations, such as arbitrary arrests and coercive investigations.

Minister Villatoro explained, “They will be given a proper sentence for all the crimes they committed between 2012 and 2022.”
