The US Department of Justice said so Former President Donald Trump can be sued by the police or lawmakers for the assault on the Capitol which took place on January 6, 2021.
The department wrote that while a president has broad authority to communicate with the public on matters of national concern, “no part of a president’s official responsibilities includes inciting imminent private violence”.
“By its nature, such conduct is clearly outside the official and constitutional duties of a president,” they said.
The department’s position that Trump is not immune from litigation in that case was presented in documents filed in a federal appeals court.
They are signed by attorneys in the Department’s Civil Affairs Division, e does not affect criminal investigations except if Trump can be prosecuted for his attempts to overturn the election results.
In fact, the lawyers stressed that they are not taking sides on the criminal vulnerability of Trump or anyone else.
What happened in 2021
It was one of the most dramatic days in American history. One will not easily forget the image of a crowd of supporters of then former President Donald Trump breaking down doors, climbing over windows to enter the Capitol in Washington en masse with the aim of interrupting the session that would have consecrated Joe Biden the winner.
Terrified lawmakers running down the halls amid tear gas and destruction by a horde of violent and injured police officers, Vice President Mike Pence seeking refuge, assailants breaking into Nancy Pelosi’s office to break everything down. This is what happened.
More than two years later, the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, in which there were 5 dead and about 140 injured police officers, continues to mark the political agenda of the United States.
In fact, 20 of the elected deputies who are blocking the election of the head of the House of Representatives these days believe that the 2020 elections – in which Biden won despite Trump’s rejection – were fraudulent.
Many of them were present on that fateful day when hundreds of Trump supporters broke through fences and forced their way into Congress, later voting against Biden’s certification.
The violent broke everything. A total of five people died in the attack, including one officer who suffered a heart attack hours after the attack.
Donald Trump was impeached for that dramatic day for American democracy, but was acquitted by the Senate, where Republicans backed him.
