Reid was one of two court-appointed psychiatrists who evaluated Holmes’s mental health before the trial. The specialist spent a total of 24 hours interviewing Holmes in July and August 2014.Two years after the massacre.
The doctor also reviewed between 80,000 and 85,000 pages of documents provided by prosecutors, defense and law enforcement.
In the book A Dark Night in Aurora: James Holmes and the Colorado ShootingsReid acknowledges that readers will want to know why he committed the mass murder and predicts they won’t be happy with his conclusion.
“The answer – and this is indeed the answer, but it’s not very satisfying – lies in the an unimaginably detailed and complex confluence that we can’t reproduce because we can’t see everything,” he writes.
In his interview with the AP, Reid lists the factors that can be seen: Holmes’s mental illness and how it affected his behavior.
On the one hand I was how Holmes’s personality shaped his awkward interactions with other people and influenced his worldview.
On the other hand, they were too the ups and downs of Holmes’s life, as he struggled to graduate from the University of Colorado at Denver with a degree in neuroscience and broke up with his girlfriend.
The other factors are unknown, Reid said, “because nobody knows your entire social, genetic and biological life.”
Because he mass murdered James Holmes
Reid said society may never have a full understanding of what prompted Holmes to commit the murder.
The Psychiatrist’s Book is a chronology of Holmes’ life, from his relatively uneventful childhood through the murders, trial, conviction and conviction.. Reid said it was based on court documents, including videotaped interviews with Holmes, that were shown to jurors during the trial.
A dark night in Aurora… includes a handful of hitherto unknown facts, the most startling of which is that Holmes suggested to Reid in one of his videotaped interviews that he could kill again if given the chance.
