Elon Musk Tesla and SpaceX CEO (CEO) planned and requested an experiment to implant a chip in the human brain, but it turned out that the US health authorities refused.
On the 2nd (local time), Reuters quoted seven former and current executives and employees of Neuralink, a brain neuroscience startup founded by Musk, and said, “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Neuralink applied for chips in humans early last year. It denied approval for the transplant experiment.”
Musk has mentioned several times since 2016, when he founded Neuralink, when he will start experimenting with implanting chips into human brains. However, it was not until last year that the staff requested FDA approval for the experiment, and it was eventually denied, the news agency explained.
Neuralink is developing an interface and system that connects a computer chip by inserting a computer chip into the brain to create a system that can control various devices with only human thoughts.
The news agency said, “The FDA has identified dozens of issues that need to be addressed before Neuralink begins human trials in the United States.”
The FDA expressed concern that the chip implanted in the brain could travel to other areas of the subject’s brain and that the chip could overheat and damage tissue. Another issue was how to remove the implanted chip without damaging the brain.
In this regard, Neuralink employees said, “These issues that the FDA is concerned about are not going to be resolved anytime soon.” Musk’s plan to obtain related experiment approval by the first half of this year is also expected to be disrupted due to the FDA’s failure to approve it.
Neuralink is currently conducting related experiments on animals such as pigs and monkeys. However, it is said that it is being investigated by US federal prosecutors for causing the deaths of too many animals. It is known that 1,500 animals have died from Neuralink’s experiments since 2018.
