Former White House chief Donald Trump proclaimed himself the only one capable of saving the United States from Democratic “warmongers” and Republican Party “crazies” on Saturday, in an ultraconservative forum in which the former president was also present the Brazilian Jair Bolsonaro, with whom he exchanged warm compliments.

To cheers and cheers, the two former presidents delivered their speeches at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), in a city near Washington.

As a candidate for the Republican nomination for the 2024 election, Trump left no puppets with his head.

He estimated that the United States is on its knees and Americans must wage “an epic fight to save” the “country from people who hate it and want to destroy it completely.”

“We had a Republican Party run by weirdos, neocons, globalists, open border freaks and jerks,” he said, naming a few prominent Republicans.

In his view, Americans were tired of “entrenched political dynasties on both sides, rotten special interests, China-loving politicians” and advocates of “interminable foreign wars.”

“If something doesn’t happen soon, we’ll have World War III,” warned Trump, who frowns on US aid to Ukraine.

“I am the only candidate who can make this promise: I will avoid World War III,” he said.

angry speech

In almost two hours of speech, he reviewed his recurring themes, such as the result of the 2020 presidential election won by Democrat Joe Biden and which he considers fraudulent.

He lashed out at “radical left” prosecutors at a time when he could be brought to justice for victims of the Capitol storming committed by his supporters in January 2021.

And as always he raised the issue of immigration.

The former president boasted that he had deported tens of thousands of migrants and that he had begun building a wall on the border with Mexico, stopped by Biden, and which he promises to expand if he returns to the White House.

Trump denounced the “total chaos” at the border and accused several countries of “emptying their prisons, asylums and psychiatric institutions and sending all their problems directly to the landfill: the United States”.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants, the vast majority of whom are poor Latinos, attempt to cross the border into the United States in search of a better life or to escape the violence in their countries.

absences

The conservative convention had notable absences as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence, two possible opponents for 2024, to avoid being humiliated by diehard Trump supporters.

Her only declared rival, Nikki Haley, experienced it firsthand on Friday, getting interrupted time and time again.

And it is that Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement has taken over the CPAC.

During the convention, the hall was half-empty but it filled up when Bolsonaro and Trump took the stage.

“In 2016 I declared: I am your voice. Today I add: I am your warrior, I am your justice. And to those who have been wronged and betrayed: I am your revenge,” Trump said.

Before him there were several speakers who did flaunt your Christian values and condemned the rights of transgender people.

Praise to Jair Bolsonaro

The other CPAC star was Bolsonaro, who says he has an “exceptional” relationship with Trump.

“Right now I thank God for my second life and he too for the mission of being President of the Republic for one term, but I feel, deep down, that this mission is not finished yet,” he told a cheering audience.

His second life began after 2018 stabbing which left sequelae for which he had to be hospitalized several times, one of which was in Florida, in the south of the United States, where he arrived in December, before the inauguration of his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro, 67, has once again complained about the election results.

“I had a lot more support in 2022 than in 2018. I don’t know why the numbers showed otherwise,” repeated the retired army captain, who in February announced plans to return “in the coming weeks” to his Country, where the Brazilian authorities are investigating whether or not it was he who instigated the attacks by his supporters against the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court on 8 January.

In a speech dotted with references to God and the Bible, Bolsonaro reiterated that he believed he had done “a good job”. “I remain true to our principles, our motto, God, country, family and freedom,” he proclaimed.
