A large amount of cash was found at a garbage collection facility in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, and the police are looking for the owner. Thirteen people claimed that they were the owner of the money.

According to multiple Japanese media such as HBC on the 5th (local time), the Sapporo Northern Police Station found 10 million yen (about 100 million won) in cash at a local garbage collection facility on the 21st of last month.

A worker at the garbage collection facility reported to the police at 9:15 am on January 30 that he saw bundles of cash pouring out while separating milk cartons and magazines.

The total amount of cash found was 10 million yen. All were 10,000 yen bills, and nothing was covered. It is known that the garbage containing cash was collected in January, and the area is Nishi-ku or Teine-ku in Sapporo City.

The Sapporo city authorities and the police tried to find the owner of the cash, but they did not come up with any clues to identify the owner, so they set out to find the lost person.

The police revealed that there were a total of 13 people claiming to be the owner as of the last 3 days. They claimed, “It seems that grandparents with dementia threw it away as garbage,” and “It seems that someone stole the cash from the house and dropped it.”

The police will ask them about the background and characteristics of the loss of the money and return the money after confirming that they are the real owners.

As the claims continued that the cash was theirs, a lawyer warned, “It is a crime of fraud to claim lost property or money after reporting it as if it had been dropped.”

If the owner is not found within 3 months after notification, 10 million yen becomes the property of the city of Sapporo according to the Civil Code.

It is the first time since 10 million yen in cash was found in an abandoned massage chair during garbage disposal in Sanagawa City in 2012 that an unknown amount of cash was found. There were 24 reports at the time, but it was eventually found to belong to a man who died two years ago and was returned to the deceased’s eldest daughter.
