An 18-year-old girl underwent emergency surgery for a giant abdominal tumor weighing around 20 kilos. The woman presented to a hospital guard in severe pain and there they noticed the strange and anomalous situation. She was operated on for three hours and is in good health. The peculiarity of the case is that the patient herself and her family thought that the abdominal swelling was actually due to “overweight”.

“She’s always been chubby, We thought it was due to being overweight, but it started to swell and feel pain,” said Sonia Ramírez, the mother of the young woman being operated on. “I am very happy with the success of the operation. Thank God everything went very well.”

Doctor Danilo Baltazar, subspecialist in gynecological oncology, reported that the “giant” tumor was successfully removed after an operative process that lasted more than three hours and was sent for pathological studies.

“In the coming days we will receive the final studies to decide whether the patient will receive adjuvant chemotherapy or will have another type of treatment. This is the work we do at the IREN center,” added the surgeon.

The situation occurred in the region of Junín, in Peru. The size of the abdomen was similar to that of a person pregnant with twins.

The family mistook the tumor for "fat".

“We are awaiting the results of the studies to decide whether the patient will receive chemotherapy or some other type of treatment,” explained the specialist. The success of the operation finally gave Andrea’s family a breather, who felt deeply grateful for the “warm attention” they received in the hospital. “We always thought she was plump because of being overweight, but when she started to swell and feel pain, we realized there was something else,” said the young woman’s mother.

Size in oncology may not correlate with malignancy. This is the case with giant gynecological tumors, which despite their spectacular nature are usually benign lesions in which resection and subsequent follow-up is sufficient.
