In that video, taken from the food court, we see that a few seconds before the ceiling begins to release white powder and water. For this reason the area had been cordoned off. An employee of the venue is also observed driving past the venue with a car and running shortly before the collapse.

The firefighters explained it there were no casualties thanks to the mall food court being vacated due to that dripping. After the collapse, the mall was closed.

In other images broadcast by the local media, people can be seen running out of the building and chaos ensues, both at the venue’s exit doors and on the street, with street vendors trying to prevent the stampede from wearing the their goods.

“The leak came from falling harder and harder and suddenly everything gave way. People started running, leaving their belongings behind. there was a lot of despair“said Ana Luiza Lima, 15.

The event occurred in Osasco Plaza Shoppingon the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil. And it happened at a time when the mall was open. That’s why it sounds incredible that there were no injuries among those present.

Although this time the tragedy happened very close, in that same place, in 1996, a gas leak and a powerful explosion killed 46 people and wounded 372 others. It was also in the food court and at lunchtime.

At that point, it was explained that the gas leaked inside the facility for a month, filling all the underground space and combining with oxygen before the explosion. As a result of what happened, the Justice of San Pablo convicted five people, although all were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The mayor assures that the shopping center has not been enabled for operation

“Before the fall, a creak was heard and then everything collapsed,” explained the mayor of Osasco in a report which underlined how the slab, installed ten years ago, could not support the weight of the cars. They also confirmed that work was underway to expand the car park.

For his part, the mayor of the place, Rogério Lins, reported that the operating license of the shopping center had been revoked: “It’s totally forbidden shopping. Civil protection. GCM, SAMU, Crea-SP, Scientific Police, Civil Police and Military Police will follow every step”.

In addition, he said they will ask for “a complete technical report on the structure of the building” and warned that “the city council will take all appropriate and necessary measures”.

For their part, the authorities who have operated on site do not exclude that there may be new landslides in other sectors of the mall, so technical teams are supervising the facilities.

“Management remains committed and will provide the necessary support to merchants and regular customers to return to normality,” the mall’s administration said in a statement.
