CNN reported on the 12th (local time) that the mothers and wives of Russian soldiers who were conscripted for the war in Ukraine appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, “don’t send them to the battlefield without proper training and munitions and drive them to death.”
According to CNN, recently, a video of about 20 women with hard expressions standing outside holding a paper board with “580 Independent Howitzer Brigade” written in Russian on SOTA, an independent Russian telegram channel, was uploaded. This paper board says ‘March 11, 2023’, so it is estimated that it was filmed on that day.
In the video, the women claimed that their husbands and sons, who were conscripted under the mobilization order issued by President Putin in September of last year, were forcibly mobilized to the battlefield from the beginning of this month after training for just four days. “My husband is deployed on the front lines,” said one woman. “The conscripts are sent in like sheep being led to the slaughter, five at a time, to storm a fortified area against 100 heavily armed enemy forces (Ukrainian forces).” said. He added, “As they are artillery, we demand that they be taken out of the line of contact with the enemy and supplied with artillery and shells.” CNN explained that it could not directly confirm the claims of the women in the video.
The Russian military is known to have recruited about 300,000 soldiers under the order to mobilize reserve forces issued in September of last year when it was on the defensive as the war in Ukraine lasted longer than expected. However, foreign media reported that the conscripted soldiers were deployed to the front without proper training or equipment, causing dissatisfaction not only in the Russian military but also in society. CNN reported that the families of the conscripts pointed out problems such as discipline problems in the Russian military, lack of leadership in the middle ranks, lack of training, and poor supply of military uniforms, food, and medical supplies.
Russia and Ukraine are continuing a ‘bloody war’ over Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, a fierce battleground. According to Reuters, the two countries claimed that “hundreds of enemy soldiers were killed” in the 24-hour battle of Bahmut on the 11th. British military intelligence authorities said on the same day that the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary group, had taken control of most of the eastern part of Bahmut.
