Oscars 2023 most embarrassing moment: Angela Bassett’s disappointment with loss to Jamie Lee Curtis

One of the surprises of the 2023 Oscars was Jamie Lee Curtis’ triumph in the category Best Supporting Actress for his extravagant role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Even she didn’t know she’d win, so when her name was announced, her reaction was pretty genuine.

Even as Curtis was expressing his happiness, there were teammates who couldn’t hide their disappointment at losing. one of them was Angela Bassettothe main candidate to keep the statuette.

When her opponent’s name dropped out of the envelope, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress froze, poker face. His indifference to Curtis’s triumph was all the more evident because of his colleagues Stephanie Hsu AND hongchautwo who were also battling for the prize, were almost as excited as Jamie Lee.

the big disappointment

Bassett had everything to hold the statuette. In the sequel to Black Panther, she plays the powerful Ramonda, the mother of T’Challa.

His participation in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is historic in terms of the Oscars, as he made it the first person to be nominated for an Academy Award for a Marvel film.

Additionally, earlier this year she became the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) actress to receive a Golden Globe nomination, and also the first to win one.

As much as things seem to be changing, the Academy is far from making up for decades of lack of diversity among winners: To date, it has only given one Best Lead Actress award to a black woman in its entire history. He went to Halle Berryin 2001.

Jamie Lee’s unforgettable speech

Aside from Bassett’s chagrin and already moving on to Jamie Lee’s triumph, it’s worth noting that the 64-year-old actress headlined in front of the mic in the first big moment of the evening.

Upon receiving her first Oscar, Curtis said, “I promised to do well because I’m a good girl. I know it feels like I’m here alone, but it’s not, I have hundreds of people, it’s hundreds of people. The entire team and group of artists who made this film, we got an Oscar. To the dream team, my agent, we won an Oscar.”

Then she thanked her “beautiful husband”, her daughters, her sister and all the people who have supported her films throughout her career years. “We won an Oscar together,” she said.

Finally, Jamie Lee dedicated some special words to her parents Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, who, like her, have been nominated for Oscars in several categories: “I just want to tell you that I just won an Oscar”.
