A man was heartbroken after a DNA kit exposes her mother as a traitor, which caused a rift in his whole family. She explained that she saw the genetic tests being sold in pharmacies for an average cost of $80 and bought them as a sort of “joke”. He said he brought one for himself and one for his father, having no previous suspicions of any kind.
However, he never expected that his results would change their lives. The 19-year-old said: ‘We received our results a few days ago and I went to the DNA relatives section to see my matches. Top, he figured my father shared only 29.2% of his DNA with me.
“That didn’t make sense to me since we’re so similar, so it was definitely my father,” she analyzed.
The teen later learned that she also shared 24.6% of the DNA with her cousin, also predicting that she would be her half-sister, since cousins usually shared about 12%.
And I add: “I couldn’t think of a genetic relationship to explain what I was seeing and had doubts about the accuracy of the percentages.”
“Share rates are extremely accurate and are highly unlikely to be false. The only realistic explanation for what I was seeing was that my uncle, my cousin’s father and my father’s brother, is my father.”
“Reality hit me in the face like a flying sack of bricks.”
“All the dots aligned and I felt a sense of loss. I sat in my room for an hour in shock and then a sense of anger washed over me. I needed some answers.”
Without a second thought, she showed her mother her DNA results and asked why they didn’t match.. “I asked him if he cheated on Dad with Uncle David,” she said.
“I have never seen color fade from someone’s face so quickly. She looked dumbfounded and then she mumbled: ‘What kind of question is this? Obviously not’. “I told him everything: the test, the percentages, the DNA matches, everything! My mom fell to the floor crying, begging me not to tell dad.”
He went on to explain how he phoned his cousin, actually his stepsister, to tell her everything. “She ended the call screaming. My dad (now uncle) then came home and ran to my room asking what was wrong with mom.”
“I also told him everything. He didn’t say anything after he calmed down. He left the room and I closed the door. For the next few hours, I listened to my entire family fall apart outside my door. My parents had a heated argument and my grandparents rushed to see what was going on.”
My aunt and David showed up shortly after and I’m pretty sure I heard my dad and David physically arguing. Total chaos. I feel like shit, I know it’s not my fault, but I can’t help but think it’s all my fault.”
“If I had spent my birthday money on something else, none of this would have happened, but another part of me is happy to know the truth.” After sharing her story on Reddit, many users found ways she could try to save the relationships between her loved ones, while others offered her words of support.
One user said: “Call your father, make it clear that you still see him as your father; it could really help him.”. Another user added, “The only person to blame is your mom and ‘uncle’. She and he are the ones who cheated and lied. You don’t have to feel guilty about exposing their guilt.”
Legal framework
Article 47 of the Civil Code prohibits marrying relatives in the direct line (parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren) and in the collateral line (siblings) up to the third degree, even if uncles and nephews can do so with judicial permission.
