The Argentine ambassador to Ecuador, Gabriel Fuks, left Quito this Friday in the midst of the scandal over the escape of a former official convicted of corruption and three days after being declared persona non grata.
Fuks left the Argentine diplomatic post in Quito and left the country at 10 in the morning, as confirmed by Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín.
It was the same Holguín that on Tuesday he sent off Fuks from that country declaring him persona non grata and granting him three days leave.
The Ecuadorian diplomatic representative insinuated that Fucks “cleared” the area of police so that María Duarte Pesantes, a former official Rafael Correa convicted of corruption, will run away. Duarte Pesantes was a “guest” at the Argentine embassy.
“This man (for Fuks) was not only an accomplice in Mrs. Duarte’s removal from the Embassy, but he lied to us, from Monday to Wednesday, not once but on several occasions, and it was his own president who told him said he denied it and his own foreign minister who denied it,” Holguín said in an interview with FM Mundo.
Duarte Pesantes fled without a trace from the embassy headquarters where she had been a refugee since early 2020 in order not to be detained. But reappeared in Caracas doing administrative “procedures” with Ambassador Oscar Laborde.
Correa’s former official entered the Argentine embassy in August 2020 when the then chargé d’affaires of Argentina opened the doors to him on instruction from Buenos Aires. Carlos Catella is today Director of Migrations within the consular area, and since there was no ambassador, he managed the Argentine office between the end of 2019 and July 2022, when Fuks arrived.
Last year, Alberto Fernández granted him political asylum, but the woman was unable to leave the country because Guillermo Lasso, president of Ecuador, did not grant her a pass of immunity to reach the airport. Lasso faces Correa.
He escaped from the embassy over the weekend, and when police asked Fuks for the embassy’s security cameras, he refused to hand them over.
fuck it was Security Secretary of Alberto Fernández, between 2019 and 2021. The former legislator and Peronist militant in Buenos Aires spent more time waiting to go to the embassy (nine months) than in charge of the mission (eight months).
Until mid-September 2021, his post was that of Secretary of the Federal Articulation of the Security of the Argentine Nation under the charge of the former minister of the area, Sabina Frederic. Frederic’s fall into political “disgrace” dragged down the entire leadership of the area.
The president appointed him ambassador to Ecuador a month later to correct the link with Lasso, as the embassy had been vacant since December 2019 because Fernández got along very well with Rafael Correa’s successor, Lenin Moreno. At the time, Lasso gave him the pleasure of styling in seven days.
