The US White House expressed deep concern on the 17th (local time) over China’s active moves to mediate an armistice in the Ukraine war.
According to CNN and the Associated Press, White House National Security Council (NSC) Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said at a press conference that day, “We are deeply concerned about China’s actions in expressing its willingness to mediate to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
Coordinator Kirby noted that under the current conditions, it is highly unlikely that a ceasefire will lead to a just and lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Coordinator Kirby also stressed that China’s intervention could benefit Russia at the expense of Ukraine.
In addition, Coordinator Kirby explained that President Joe Biden is looking forward to having a future conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but there is no plan for now, saying, “We will proceed with coordination in the next few days.”
President Xi Jinping will visit Russia on the 20th and 22nd to hold a summit meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
He briefs President Putin on the reader’s Ukraine war arbitration proposal announced by China. At its core, the arbitration proposal calls for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
“A ceasefire now would effectively recognize Russian occupied territories, recognizing Russian interests and attempts to conquer neighboring territories by force,” Kirby said.
At the same time, Coordinator Kirby warned that “Russia will use the power outage to further strengthen its position in Ukraine,” and warned that it would launch an offensive by supplementing its forces.
Coordinator Kirby urged Xi to discuss related issues with President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying, “Ukraine is fighting to defend its sovereignty and we will continue to support it.”
The United States suspects China is trying to provide lethal weaponry to Russia. Western media reported that China is pursuing a plan to send drones and ammunition in response to Russia’s request.
In this regard, Coordinator Kirby said, “We have yet to confirm any signs that China is actually trying to provide weapons and equipment.”
The US is pressuring China not to supply arms to Russia. China plans to impose sanctions on China if it goes ahead with arms supply.
