A mysterious hidden cave has been found, in which a man lived for 40 years, and its images have shocked researchers. Millican Daltona lonely Londoner, he decided to escape the busy life of the city and one day settled on a hill in the Lake District National Park.
There he built a kind of homemade cave and arranged his house, where he lived at the end of the 19th century. Dalton was born into a Protestant family in 1867 and moved to London at the age of 7, following his father’s death.
He worked as an insurance clerk, but when he turned 40 he decided he wanted a simpler life in the country.
Soon afterwards he moved to Loughton, Buckinghamshire, living in a log cabin in the winter and camping in the Lake District in the summer. Eventually he settled permanently in the cave.
There he baked bread, made his own clothes and was known for his eccentric clothes and country look.
He preferred to avoid cash, so he traded guide services and outdoor gear for food and cigarettes.
In a 1941 newspaper article, Millican, then 73, spoke of his love of nature. He would say, “I don’t sleep much, and while I’m awake I lie down and listen and think. There’s a lot to think about right now, right?”

Millican Dalton Cave consists of two interconnected level caves, which were formed naturally.
Millican died in 1947, aged 79, after suffering from pneumonia.
