A student was killed and another was wounded in a Texas high school shooting this monday. Police have arrested a suspect in the attack.
The shooting occurred outside Lamar High School in Arlington at around 6:55 am, shortly before students arrived for their first day of school after spring break, police and the school district said.
One student was hit and the other was injured by “flying debris,” and both received immediate medical attention, said school district spokeswoman Anita Foster. It was later confirmed that one of them had died of his serious injuries.
Arlington Police reported that the alleged attacker never entered the school premises and was arrested shortly after officers arrived at the scene. Authorities tweeted at 7:21 that the site was under security and did not release any further information about the attacker.
Because the shooter is a minor, he will not be publicly identified, police spokesman Tim Ciesco later said. He added that the department will provide more information during an afternoon press conference.
Foster said arriving school buses and other students were diverted off campus before classes started.
Everyone, including parents, was asked to stay away from the facility while the investigation continued. Police said at 10.40am that they had completed their inspection of the facility and that the students would be released to their guardians at a “reunion centre” from noon.
