How is the chemical castration proposed by the Peruvian government for rapists

This type of punishment is already used in some countries in the world, such as Poland, the Czech Republic and South Korea. There they use chemical castration which consists of using drugs to reduce sexual activity and libido.

The effect of these ingredients begins to be felt only after 28 days of application. And to maintain the effect, the drug should be applied monthly, quarterly or twice a year. In this way, testosterone levels in the aggressor can be reduced.

Undoubtedly, the application of the treatment, and its maintenance, is one of the things that specialists are most concerned about.

Alberto Tejada, former health minister and urologist, told Canal N in an interview that “this president’s initiative (chemical castration for rapists) is a public sentiment. They seek to generate punishment on the aggressor. However, this measure is not new, there are already, year after year, similar measures. The issue here is feasibility and effectiveness, and whether this is the solution to the problem”.

This punishment is controversial, moreover, because some organizations, including Amnesty International, consider it cruel and inhumane.

Although President Pedro Castillo did not provide further details about the initiativesaid that the law will soon be formalized and awaiting the support of the Republican Congress to which it will be sent.

“Don’t give up a popular shout,” Castillo insisted referring to the matter.

However, Félix Chero, Peruvian Minister of Justice, provided more information about the proposal. He said that chemical castration would be a measure to be accompanied by prevention in sexual education and mental health.

Chero He said chemical castration would not be applied in cases where the aggressor would receive a life sentence.

“Therefore, we will be subject to continuous and uncertain use of the drug. Also, supervision is needed for it to be effective. For this reason, it will not survive for a long time, regardless of the constitutional principles,” he added. Chera.

The specialist admitted that it is impossible to control the implementation of these chemical products in Peruvian prisons.

The complexity is the cost and the vigilance that the drugs arrive inside a prison, where there is very complicated logistics. We understand that the prison system has a massive food and humanitarian shortage, among others, ”Chero said.

“I don’t know if in our country it will be effective over time, in the understanding that these chemicals must be consumed for life. This is not something I give to the patient and the effect is cumulative“, he continued.
