Microsoft founder Bill Gates said of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI, that it is “the most innovative technological advancement since the 1980s.”
Gates revealed this through an article titled ‘The Age of AI has begun’ on his blog.
“There were two technologies that impressed me as innovative throughout my life,” he said. He cited ‘Graphic User Interface (GUI)’ and ChatGPT, developed in the 1980s, as innovations he saw.
Gates, who said he had been involved with OpenAI since 2016, said at the time that the company was tasked with creating AI that could pass advanced biology tests. “I thought the task would keep OpenAI busy for the next two to three years, but they finished the task in a few months,” he said.
“The whole experience was amazing,” Gates said, watching an AI created by OpenAI pass a biology test with near-perfect scores.
“The development of AI is as fundamental as the birth of microprocessors, personal computers, the internet and mobile phones,” he said. “It will change the way people work, learn, travel and communicate with each other. Entire industries will reorient around them, and companies will be differentiated by how well they use AI.”
Gates also pointed out the problems with ChatGPT. “Current AI models are not good at understanding the context of human requests, resulting in strange results,” he said. “There are also problems such as giving wrong answers to math problems because AI struggles with abstract reasoning.” said.
However, he said that such a problem is not a fundamental limitation of AI and expected to be solved in a short time. “I think these issues will be fixed in two years, probably much sooner, because the developers are working on them,” Gates said.
Jensen Hwangdo, CEO of Nvidia, an American semiconductor company, emphasized that “generative AI will recreate all industries” on this day, emphasizing that the development of iPhone-level technology that has changed the world since its release has begun.
