At the hospital, not only was King able to use his body freely as before, but even if he recovered, he informed his family of a diagnosis that he could not use his right side.

The roofing engineer and healthy enough to be a promising rugby player at the local rugby club, his family despaired when he became virtually a vegetable.

After much thought, King’s mother and two older sisters asked the hospital to turn him off life support. Regarding the situation at the time, her older sister Amber Souman said, “It was a very tough decision, but he wanted to turn off the life support and let it go well.”

However, King continued to breathe on his own even after the life support was removed. After that, he woke up from a coma as his condition gradually improved. He woke up to see his family, smiled, and started talking within a few weeks. He even joked with a friend who came to visit him.

In an interview with the media after being discharged, King said, “I have a lot of friends. There are too many,” he said. “A lot of people have come to see me in the last few months, and I like that. I can feel that people genuinely care about me.”

He then expressed his gratitude to his family, saying, “My mother and older sisters took care of me and overcame the difficult times together.”

King now has all his limbs back to normal, talking and walking as he did in the past. Doctors expressed surprise at King’s recovery. The computed tomography (CT) images of his condition will also be used as learning materials in the New Zealand Medical University classroom.

However, King never fully recovered. He can never drive a car again because of his damaged eyesight, and his memory is inconsistent and partly missing.

Regarding King’s memory, the family said, “I can’t even remember that my father passed away a long time ago, so I have to explain it several times.”

King also said, “I know what you want to say, but I can’t explain it properly. It feels strange,” he said.

Currently, he plays billiards at home and meets friends. His friends said that when he fell into a coma, they came to the hospital room with a sleeping bag and a pillow and went to sleep.

Sister Souman said, “I was a quiet child to my family, but to my friends, I can’t believe that he was a ‘god’s gift’.”
