South Africa’s “Facebook Rape Killer” who successfully escaped from jail under the guise of extreme choice was spotted in a downtown area. The perpetrator approached the victim through Facebook and committed indecent assault and murder.
The British Daily Mirror reported on the 28th (local time) that rapist Murderer Thabo Bester, who is known to have self-immolated in solitary confinement at the private prison in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in May of last year, is walking around the downtown area.
In 2012, Bester was sentenced to life imprisonment for forcibly molesting and murdering one of the victims after sending a Facebook message to unspecified women saying, “I will make you a model.” Bester, who was living in her solitary confinement, took her own life by setting a fire in her room at 3:25 am on May 3 last year. Her body was found so burnt that her face could not be recognized.
However, after further investigation by the South African Department of Corrections (DCS), questionable parts were found in Bester’s death. The cause of death was ‘blunt force trauma to the head’. Despite severe burns, no signs of smoke inhalation were found. Genetic analysis performed on a sample obtained from Bester’s mother also strongly suggested that “the body was not Bester’s”.
Investigators said Bester escaped from prison, revealing close cooperation between prison insiders during the escape. Afterwards, Bloemfontein Prison identified the prison guards who helped Bester break out and immediately released them from their positions.
The British Corrections Service is working with local police to track Bester’s whereabouts. According to reports so far, Bester is continuing his life on the run in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa. Several female informants also claimed that a person believed to be Bester had contacted them through social media.
South Africa’s Ministry of Justice and Department of Corrections made an official statement and appealed for active participation in the tip-off so that Bester’s whereabouts can be traced.
