President Yoon Seok-yeol announced a joint statement with US President Joe Biden prior to the plenary session of the 2nd Democracy Summit on the afternoon of the 29th. The two emphasized what efforts Korea has made to preserve democracy, saying that Korea’s democracy is ‘a powerful beacon in the Indo-Pacific region’.

In a joint statement, the leaders of the United States and South Korea emphasized, “The Republic of Korea and the United States share a deep bond based on common democratic values ​​and respect for human rights, and we will further strengthen strong political, economic, security, and people-to-people ties.”

He also announced that “the Republic of Korea will host the 3rd summit in the future,” saying that he hopes to build links between democratic countries through the joint hosting of the 2nd Democracy Summit.

“The Republic of Korea’s democratic institutions are a powerful beacon in the Indo-Pacific region,” the two leaders said, “showing the world that democracy creates the conditions needed to foster lasting security and prosperity.”

“Recently, the Republic of Korea has emerged as a global leader, in no small part due to the ceaseless efforts of the people of the Republic of Korea to enhance government transparency, ensure effective checks and balances, and develop laws that respond to public needs. I did,” he cheered.

“Enhancing transparent and accountable governance based on public consent is a fundamental task of our time,” the two leaders said. Cooperation between strong and resilient democracies is essential to address the world’s most significant challenges, including ensuring that new technologies contribute to, and not undermine, democratic societies.”

Lastly, he said, “We will work together with pride so that the momentum created at the two Democracy Summits will lead to the future and these efforts will reveal global leadership.”

The Democracy Summit will be led by the United States and South Korea and other countries will participate as co-hosts. The goal is to contain the rise of authoritarian countries, including China and Russia, and strengthen democratic solidarity. Taiwan, which suffered direct opposition from China, was also included in the list of participants.

Heads of state will participate in the General Assembly held on the 29th via video. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also scheduled to give a speech via video, but it was not possible due to his schedule of visiting the battlefield.
