Pope Francis is transferred to the Gemelli Polyclinic for “scheduled checks” for colon surgery

Pope Francis was this Wednesday afternoon at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, with “scheduled checks” due to the colon operation he underwent in 2021, according to the Holy See.

Hours before, the pope he had given his usual Wednesday general audience in St. Peter’s Square.

In July 2021 Jorge Bergoglio, then 84, underwent surgery at the Gemelli polyclinic for a diverticular stenosis (narrowing) of the intestinal colon.

Surgeon Professor Sergio Alfieri, 55, performed the operation with the support of a large group of specialists.

In 2021, Francisco underwent a three hours from what the Vatican has described as a narrowing of the large intestine.

In that speech they withdrew 30 cm of intestine.

However, a colostomy was not required.
