A New York grand jury Thursday he voted to impeach Donald Trump for a $130,000 payment to a porn star before the 2016 election and, for the first time in US history, a former president will be tried for a crime.
Trump had said weeks ago that a New York jury intended to arrest him and said he was wanted for justice. He even called his followers to a mobilization which was not very successful. It’s hard to get arrested for the crime for which he is accused, but will no doubt revitalize his supporters in his 2024 presidential election campaign.
The landmark allegation stems from the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation into how the Trump Organization filed a refund to then-Trump attorney and right-hand man Michal Cohen after Cohen I will pay Daniels to keep her quiet about an alleged sexual encounter she says she had with Trump in 2006.
Trump was filming his own TV show, “The Apprentice,” at the time of that alleged date, and He was married to his current wife, Melania Trump, who had given birth to their son, Barron, just months earlier.
The problem
The issue is not whether or not Trump cheated on his wife or paid to silence her. As it happens, the Trump Organization described the reimbursement to Cohen in its corporate records. as “legal fees” and apparently it wasn’t true but it was a campaign-related expense.
Forging business records is normally a misdemeanor under New York law, but it can be upgraded to a felony if the mistake was made to cover up another felony.
Trump denies having sex with Daniels or have committed crimes of any kind.
Trump’s Manhattan indictment comes more than four years after Cohen, who served him loyally for years before, turned against Trump and began cooperating with federal officials. state and local law enforcement in NYC.
The indictment, which will be prosecuted by District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, is the first of several criminal cases prosecuting Trump, the top contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Other cases
Trump is also being investigated by the US Justice Department for two separate crimes.
One is related to his moves to undo President Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College in the 2020 election, as he made false claims of widespread electoral fraud in the popular vote that year.
The other investigation focuses on Trump’s disposal of classified White House documents and whether he obstructed justice by keeping them at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, for more than a year while officials at the government demanded his return.
An Atlanta state attorney is also separately investigating Trump and several of his allies for their attempt to convince Georgia officials reverse loss to Biden in the state in 2020.
