The Office of National Security in the Food Chain in Hungary (Nébih) announced on Monday that a new outbreak of the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus has been recorded in the country.
According to the agency, 10,000 birds were sacrificed on a farm near the Romanian border, bringing the total number to 78,000 since the beginning of this year.
According to Nébih, the virus is lethal to birds and due to its spread, it was decided to create defense zones within a three kilometer radius.
In addition, according to the Hungarian news agency “MTI”, a ten kilometer observation area has been created around the affected farm located in the town of Nagykamarás.
According to official information, 78,000 birds were euthanized in Hungary this year as a result of H5N1 outbreaks on farms in the center and south of the country.
In all affected areas, measures have been implemented to restrict the movement of birds on farms to prevent transmission by migratory birds.
In November last year, 38,000 ducks had to be euthanized due to the presence of the avian influenza virus strain in central Hungarian regions.
