They clear a circle on ice the size of six football fields and claim an unusual world record

A group of volunteers carved a large circle out of a frozen lake in Maine, USA, and set it in motion, claiming a world record in a category few know about: the largest ice carousel.

With a diameter of 541 metersthe gigantic piece of ice estimated at 146,000 tons moved slowly like a Lazy Susan amidst screams, shouts and hugs last Saturday.

THE Ice Busters of Northern Maine they had to cut through nearly 70cm thick ice in a path carefully measured by inspection teams to create a perfect circle almost six football fields wide.

It’s a laborious but fun way to provide entertainment during the long, cold winter, and it’s become something of a rivalry in places like Finland, Minnesota and Maine. there is also a World Ice Carousel Association.

On Saturday, it took a herculean effort to get the giant puck moving 10 outboard engines, farm equipment that drives big propellers and a couple of wheeled vehicles, too, he said.

Chuck Zwilling, of Little Falls, Minnesota, was there to help. And he said that he, his family and the volunteers at home they will create an even bigger one to maintain competition.

But first, Zwilling said, he needs to identify a large enough lake. Green Prairie Fish Lakeused for the above record, is too small for the 2,000-foot-diameter ice disk it imagines.

“It is the land of the 10,000 lakes in MinnesotaSo we have many options,” he joked.
