Actress, singer and writer Jennette McCurdy surprised her fans by launching her biography in which she recounts controversial situations experienced in the Nickelodeon youth series iCarly. For the work you have chosen a marketing and controversial title: “I’m glad my mother is dead.”
Within weeks, the book topped the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list and was booming in bookstores in the United States and around the world.
Among other revelations, he says he was offered $300,000 not to mention the abuse he suffered on the series, while playing Sam Puckett.
In the pages of her new book, the 30-year-old actress recounts how a man she refers to as “The Creator” allegedly “emotionally abused” her, offering her alcohol and sexualizing her.
Many claim that the “Creator” would have been Dan Schneidershowrunner of the program which parted ways with Nickelodeon in 2018. That year, as the New York Times points out, Schneider was accused of verbally abusing several members of the company, including young actors and minor actresses.
Serious Complaints Against “The Creator”
In her memoirs, McCurdy recounts how the “Maker” first gave her a taste of alcohol when she was just 18, encouraging her to take “a sip” of his drink.
According to McCurdy, he told her, “Nobody’s watching, Jennette. Are you OK. The victorious always get drunk together. iCarly babies are so healthy. We have to give them a bit of an advantage.”
“The Creator” mentioned “the guys from Victorious” because this was another of the series he produced.
In turn, McCurdy denounced that in the production they sexualized her and even they photographed her in a bikini. At the time, she recalls feeling “uncomfortable” with her body, a problem she had had since at least she was 11 years old and on strict diets.
“He pats me on the back and then the pat turns into a massage,” the actress recalls. “My shoulders have many knots, but I don’t want the Creator to remove them. I would like to say something, tell him to stop, but I’m too afraid to offend him,” she continues.
In this sense, it also revives as the Creator directed (literally) her first kisswhich was with the actor Nathan Cress and, far from dreamed of, it happened in front of and not behind the scenes.
I don’t want my first kiss to be like this. I want my first kiss to be a real first kiss, not a kiss for a TV show,” McCurdy noted.
A fortune to silence her
After finishing iCarly, McCurdy starred in Sam & Cat for a year and disassociated himself from the company.
After going through these experiences from 2007 to 2012, when he played Sam in iCarly, the actress says so Nickelodeon’s top executives offered him $300,000 not to speak publicly about what he’d been through.
“Manager number 2 intervenes […] Well, think of it as a thank-you gift,” McCurdy says, the executive told him, implying it was “free money.”
“No it’s not. This is not free money. This seems like money to me to keep quiet,” thinks the actress.
“Nickelodeon is offering me $300,000 not to publicly talk about my experience on the show? My personal experience of abuse by Creator? Shouldn’t they have some sort of moral compass?” Jennette wrote, who of course declined the offer.
Schneider’s defense
When asked about his connection to the actors and actresses he has worked with, Schneider said in an interview with The New York Times that “I would not have had the long-term friendships and continued loyalty of so many respectable people if I had my actors of any age.” especially minors.”
In a 2021 note, the producer says he is “very aware” of what is being said about him. He believes that rumors about his affairs are “ridiculous” and that social media should not freely push “no lies”. “The play was totally innocent,” he said.
Miranda Cosgrove’s reaction
When she started participating in iCarly (which months ago launched its reboot without her character), Jennette was only 15 years old. She had started in the acting business because her mother Debra wanted it that way.
Miranda Cosgrovethe protagonist of the series, spoke to the Times and She claimed she was unaware of what was happening with her partner.
“When you’re young, you’re too wrapped up in your own world and you don’t realize that other people are going through much harder things than you are,” the 29-year-old actress said.
