The phenomenon of Uh, the Moon goddess of the Mayas, flooded the archaeological area of Chichén Itzá, in southern Mexico, with light, where she stopped right at the north side of the Castle of Kukulcán and began the descent of the so-called silver snake .
“It is an archaeo-astronomical phenomenon which confirms the dualism between Sun and Moon in the castle of Chichén Itzáthe ceremonial center of the Maya which is located in the heart of that pre-Hispanic site,” the custodian of the site, José Antonio Keb Cetina, explained to EFE.
The full moon can be seen on Maundy Thursday especially from 3.30 (9.30 GMT) to 4.04 (10.04 GMT), when five triangles of light form.
The day before, the moon serpent had formed seven triangles of light.
The first hours of Holy Thursday, came the moon serpent with five triangles and its silver colored dressjust as a few weeks ago the phenomenon of Kukulcán seemed to fertilize the Mayab, which in the Mayan language means “the Land of the few, of the privileged”.
“Mayan architects built the castle in a privileged place for them to dominate the cosmos and capture the hierophany of their gods, in this case Kukulcán Lunar,” assured mathematician Eddie Salazar Gamboa, who for 30 years discovered this phenomenon together with archaeologist Víctor Segovia Pinto.
Overhead, the huge moon seems to flaunt its brilliance, the power it held even among the elite, priests, and Mayan people I met and who revered it.to the dualism between the religious system and the philosophical systembetween Kin (Sun) and Uh (Moon).
For the director of the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, Marco Antonio Santos Ramírez, the phenomenon is linked to astronomy and the agricultural calendar of the ancient inhabitants of the pre-Columbian city.
For years (1993) this astronomical bowing phenomenon that occurs after the vernal equinox, when the Moon is on the western horizon, has been publicized, he told EFE.
The archaeologist added that too the duality of that beautiful show that is born on the full moon is investigated.
There are many hypotheses and theories that have not yet been verified, but surely the pre-Hispanic Mayans observed this same nocturnal beauty and must have given it a relevant meaning, he assured.
He said that the peculiarity of the descent of the silver serpent is due to the fact that the full moon has the same position as the sun during the vernal equinox.
The arrival of the moon serpent with five and seven light triangles confirms mathematician Eddie Salazar Gamboa’s hypothesis that the astronomical arc phenomenon can be observed with more isosceles.
