Each year the number of immigrants who decide to live in United States of America, either because they are looking for a job change or to improve their quality of life. The North American country offers a wide variety of visas that fit each person’s requirements and needs.
Similarly, regardless of a person’s immigration status, every immigrant has a set of rights which must be strictly observed, in accordance with the art National Constitution from the United States. It is important to know them and know how to present them, as a meeting with the immigration authorities is never excluded.
That is why several organizations related to immigrant containment have designed a Red card which includes the main rights to be considered if an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) agent wants to detain you or obtain more information.
How is the red card for immigrants?
One of the pioneering organizations in the dissemination of these cards is the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, in San Francisco, Calif. In them they have included relevant information on the immigrant’s constitutional rights, both in Spanish as in English.
the card is free for those wishing to obtain it and can be purchased from this link. It lists a series of data that can help immigrants – regular or irregular – to deal with a situation of possible detention:
- Do not open the door if an immigration officer is knocking on the door.
- Do not answer any of the Immigration Officer’s questions if he tries to speak to you. You have the right to remain silent. You don’t need to give the agent your name. If you are at work, ask the agent if you are free to leave and if the agent says yes, leave. You have the right to speak to a lawyer.
- Don’t sign anything without speaking to a lawyer.
- Give this card to the agent. Do not open the door.
THE Church Los Angeles has also started a campaign to distribute these cards to immigrants who need them. Likewise, they are more related to undocumented and vulnerable people.
