Nusret Gökche, a chef from Turkiye, nicknamed “Salt Bae” for his unique “salt-sprinkling” performance, was embroiled in controversy after remarking on a “student discount.”

According to the British Daily Star on the 12th (hereinafter local time), Gölche shared a photo of himself taken in front of Harvard Business School on personal social media and said, “I couldn’t go to school. Education is very precious. Going forward, Nuslette Restaurant in Boston will be offering a 30% student discount.” ‘Nusret Restaurant’ is the name of a steak restaurant operated by the government.

Many netizens who came across the post poured out criticism of the government, claiming that the basic price of the Nuslet restaurant in Boston, USA, was ‘at a murderous level’.

Netizens on the criticism side pointed out that the price of ‘Golden Armor Steak’, the most expensive menu at Nuslet Restaurant, is 1,500 dollars (approximately 1.95 million won), and said that ‘poor college students’ offered student discounts, so they visited Nuslet Restaurant. He pointed out that he would not be allowed to visit.

However, there were some who refuted that this was an erroneous criticism, citing only the ‘highest priced menu with gold leaf’ as an example. In fact, the price of a typical steak at a Nuslet restaurant ranges from $160 (about 200,000 won) to $200 (about 260,000 won), and the cheapest menu, ‘Nusret Burger’, is only 30 dollars (about 40,000 won). This is a clear gap from the $1,500 (approximately 1.95 million won) suggested by netizens who gave critical opinions. With a 30% discount, the steak price drops to about $110 (about 140,000 won).

A netizen defending Golche pointed out, “People who have never been to Golche’s restaurant are criticizing it without even knowing what is written on the restaurant menu.”
