Two out of three South Koreans believe that economic development was possible because of the ROK-US alliance. One out of two Koreans said that the ROK-US alliance should be strengthened.

Only 12.0% of respondents said that Korea could have grown into an economic powerhouse without the ROK-US alliance.
As for the reason for positively evaluating the ROK-US alliance, ‘US security support’ was the most common at 52.3%. ‘Economic support such as aid from the US’ and ‘Access to the large US market and cooperation with US companies’ were 32.6% and 15.1%, respectively.
It was found that the Korean people think that the ROK-US alliance should be strengthened in the future.
In the question regarding the future prospects of the ROK-US alliance, 94.6% of respondents answered that it should be strengthened or maintained. 50.6% answered ‘very strengthened or strengthened’, and 44.0% ‘maintained the status quo’.
Only 5.4% of respondents said the ROK-US alliance should be reduced.
As for the reason for strengthening the ROK-US alliance, 34.2% answered ‘guaranteeing national security through strengthening national defense’ and ‘strengthening geopolitical stability surrounding the Korean Peninsula’ at 33.0%.
89.0% of the respondents also cited the United States as Korea’s number one partner. Next were China (35.2%), Japan (23.4%) and the European Union (EU, 17.5%).
