Two days after a bloody prison riot with a death toll of 12, Ecuadorian authorities reported new incidents this Tuesday in the same prison, the Penitentiario Litoralthe most dangerous prison in the countrywhere between night and dawn they were explosions and shootings among the inmates of the various pavilions.
The Secretariat for attention to persons deprived of their liberty has specified that the incidents have broken out in four pavilions which members of law enforcement and the military were entering.
No victims had yet been reported, information that would only be available at the time to prosecutors and experts can enter the room.
In that same prison on Friday brawls between pavilions, controlled by various criminal groupsit left a balance of 12 prisoners dead, after the discovery of six prisoners hanged and three guards murdered.
The gangs fight for control of the place and routes of drug distribution national and international, according to the authorities.
The Littoral Penitentiary is located inside a prison complex and is considered the most violent in the Andean country. In September last year, a fight between inmates resulted in 126 inmates being killed by their comrades.
In the same place last week they were found six prisoners hanged, which would have triggered the new incidents, according to the authorities.
In January, the government of President Guillermo Lasso decided transfer the ringleaders of at least a dozen criminal organizations in a maximum security prison in Guayaquil to reduce prison riots.
According to prison system data, in 2021 some 316 inmates were killed while in 2022 there were 130 homicides.
Ecuador’s prison infrastructure has a capacity of 30,000 inmates, but after a prison census it was found that there are more than 31,300 inmates in state prisons nationwide.
The penultimate major riot occurred in November at a prison north of Quito, in which 10 prisoners were murdered by other inmates. A month earlier, 13 other inmates had been murdered in the Littoral Penitentiary.
