The story is a little over two months old but it’s just breaking: a Colorado hearse driver narrowly avoided falling into an empty canyon thanks to the body he was carrying, who made the counterweight and was heavy enough to keep the vehicle from falling off the cliff.

January 29, 2023 was a snowy night in Colorado and difficult for the driver of the Hubbard and Son funeral service to drive, as weather conditions made the journey dangerous.

But a driver in a red Durango ran past him on his way to the Eisenhower Tunnel, forcing him into an urgent maneuver.

In front of the Colorado State Patrol, he told them he had to change lanes to avoid colliding with the driver of the Durango and lost control in the middle of a dawn snowstormrunning towards the road barrier.

He lost control of the hearse and went through the barrier onto Interstate 70 before coming to a stop with the front wheels dangling off the cliff and was about to tumble off a cliff.

Video footage uploaded by CBS News shows the black vehicle covered in snow and wedged into the chasm.

“He’s a son of a bitch…hopefully,” an officer is heard to reply in the footage of the miraculous scene.

Although the driver and his family declined to speak in an on-camera interview, they told CBS News Colorado that body weight in the rear of the car was likelyWe kept the car on the road and thus prevented the hearse from plunging down the side of I-70. And he didn’t hesitate to say that it saved his life.
