Gazprom, Russia’s main company that exports natural gas to Europe, announced early Wednesday morning that it had completely stopped its gas exports to Bulgaria and Poland.
Polish gas company PGNiG has confirmed the cessation of deliveries. The situation does not affect the current supplies of PGNiG customers who receive fuel in accordance with their request.the company said in a statement.
Gas supplies to these two states will resume once they pay Russia in rubles for its natural gas, according to Gazprom.
The company warned Poland and Bulgaria on Tuesday that it intended to turn off the faucets. Russia’s gas accounts for about 50% of Poland’s consumption, but meets almost 90% of Bulgaria’s gas needs.
The Polish and Bulgarian governments did not seem surprised when Gazprom first raised its threat, assuring their people that there would be little impact for them so far. This is especially true for Poland, which plans to completely eliminate its own gas in Russia by the end of the year.
